The Bay of Plenty is hard on paint. You’ve got sun hammering the north face all summer, salt in the air anywhere near the harbour or the coast, and damp sitting on the shaded side of the house right through winter. Do an exterior properly and it’ll give you ten years or more. Rush it and you’ll watch it peel inside of two.
So I start with a wash, and then spend real time on the unglamorous part: scraping back everything that’s failed, sanding the boards, filling and priming the bare timber, and sorting out any fascia or board ends that have started to go soft. Only once that’s done does colour go anywhere near the house.
Painted weatherboard, cedar and stained timber, textured and plaster finishes, Shadowclad and the other sheet claddings, fibre cement, and all the trim, fascia and soffits that go around them. A recent one at Mount Maunganui had a bit of everything: fascia repairs, a stain on the exposed rafters, and a colour change across the textured walls, all on the same house.
Going from a stained cedar look to a painted finish, or from something light to something properly dark, changes both the prep and the number of coats it’ll take to get there. I’ll tell you honestly what your boards can handle when I’m standing in front of them, rather than promise you a result they won’t hold.
Exterior paint needs dry surfaces and reasonable temperatures to cure properly, so most of my exteriors run somewhere between spring and autumn. I plan them so the whole house is finished in one go rather than dragging on for a month, which means the ones I take on are the two-to-three-week jobs. If yours doesn’t suit the season, I’ll say so at the quote instead of starting something the weather won’t let me finish.
We go round together so I can check the boards, the fascia and the joinery, see what the old paint is doing, and talk through colours.
A fixed price within 24 hours, split by elevation. If one wall or the soffits are still sound I'll leave them out and say so, rather than charge you for work you don't need.
The house gets washed, then scraped, sanded, filled and primed. Any repairs to fascia or soft board ends happen before a drop of paint goes on.

Yes, they come up regularly. I've done cedar restains and colour changes over stained boards, including a bach and garage out at Athenree and a weatherboard exterior at Kauri Point. Stain and paint want completely different prep, so your quote will spell out which one you're getting and why.
Not if it's peeling, chalking or cracked, no. Paint only lasts as long as whatever is underneath it, so anything that's failed gets scraped back, sanded and primed first. If the old coat is sound and it's only had a wash and a light sand, then yes, we can go straight over it.
No, and I'd rather say so now than waste your time. I stick to the house itself: the cladding, fascia, soffits, windows and doors. Roofs, fences, decks and pergolas aren't work I take on, so you'll want a specialist for those.
